Pictures can be powerful tools for telling a story. When they’re used to enhance statements and already powerful quotes, the end result can be a story worth sharing. That’s why I wanted to put together a few images that help share the heart of what The Unlikely Missionary is all about.

This most recent image is of a man making a lunch of rice and beans for about 20 orphans. He’s cooking it over an open-wood fire because they’re out of gas to run the stove. In fact, the bag in his hand is the last package of food that they have, and they had to get it from another orphanage that had a little extra that day. This is the everyday struggle for many in Haiti, often literally not knowing where their next meal is coming from.

Clicking on any one of these images will open it in Facebook so that you can share it and/or download it to share elsewhere.

A little over two-and-a-half years ago I boarded a plane headed for Nairobi, and I had no idea how that trip would eventually impact my life. I was there to impact the lives of others, but I walked away a different man.

Since then, I’ve been to Port-au-Prince just months after the earthquake, and to the Dominican Republic to witness the community transforming work of a network of pastors.

And this year, I’m joining an amazing organization called Help End Local Poverty on a trip to Haiti (February 10-17). One of my key roles on this trip is that of a writer. I’ll be telling the stories of the work that’s being done to rescue children and families from the impact of extreme poverty, to restore hope by supporting immediate needs (like education), and to renew their communities with long-term, sustainable projects.

One of the things that I’m most excited about is that I may have an opportunity to meet the child that my family has recently sponsored!

But, I need help covering the costs of this trip. There are a couple of key reasons that I ask for people to help support me financially.

It helps me rely on God to provide. I don’t ever want to do anything like this on my own power. Working to raise the money means I’m trusting that the details will be taken care of as I pray for the Lord to step in.

It keeps me accountable… to you. When people invest in me for a trip like this, then I feel a sense of responsibility to “live up” to your confidence in the work that we’re doing. I’ll work hard regardless, but your support allows me to honor you in that work as well. I want your investment in Haiti to pay off as much as possible!

This is an investment in Haiti more than an investment in me, and for many people that is reward enough. However, I want to do my part to sweeten the deal a bit. So I’m going to offer some incentives for people who invest at various levels.

When you make a (tax-deductible) donation in the following amounts, then I’ll send you some cool gear. And please know that what I’m sending you comes out of my pocket, so 100% of your donation goes to cover the cost of this trip and the projects we’ll be working on.

I’m expecting this to be one of the most powerful, mind-blowing trips that I’ve been on to date, so you won’t want to miss a single post while I’m live-blogging from Haiti!

But if you’re planning to support financially, then you can use the donate button (via PayPal) to make your tax-deductible contribution directly to HELP. I’ll follow-up with them to get the information on who donated what so I can connect with you to send you your stuff!

Thank you!

Since the initial release of the e-book version of this book, I’ve been impressed with how this book is impacting people’s lives. As a result I’ve been exploring possibilities for moving from an e-book only format to offering a print version so that I can broaden the distribution.

And as of today, readers can now get The Unlikely Missionary: From Pew-Warmer to Poverty-Fighter in print format!

It is available immediately on CreateSpace and on Amazon.com. Then over the next few weeks it will be available through other wholesale distribution channels that will allow it to get picked up in stores.

Having a print version makes it easier to use in small group studies, and to share with others who may not have e-readers devices.

If you know of a bookstore or church that would like to carry the book, then let me know. I’ll be putting together some press release and purchasing information that I can share for retailers who desire to offer this book for sale.

If you’re leading a small group study and would like a book that’ll challenge people and give practical activities that you can all do to move from talk to action, then let me know. I’d love to share a personal message with your group and/or answer any questions you have for me that would enhance your discussion time.

Regardless of whether you use the book for personal or group study, thank you for making this possible!

When I wrote The Unlikely Missionary, I only intended it to be an e-book format. But thanks to some cool technology available to indie writers like me, I can now offer a print version for sale!

This will make the book a great tool for small group studies, and as a resource in church bookstores and libraries.

Individual copies will be available soon on Amazon.com, CreateSpace, and CreateSpace Direct/Ingram (for wholesale orders). I’ll make sure to update links to any of the places the book can be bought as soon as I know it becomes available through the various distribution channels.

But if you’re looking for a book to use for an upcoming small group study, then copies should be available pretty quickly on Amazon.com.

The print version will be available for $9.99, with the e-book version running $4.99. The e-book is now on sale on Kindle and Nook for $2.99.

I’ve been blown away by the reviews and how this book is impacting people’s lives! The book has also been a pretty steady resident on Amazon’s best seller list for books in Christian Evangelism. So the idea of having print copies available, and expanding distribution is a pretty exciting prospect to me right now!

If you have any special needs or requests, or would like to book me to speak at your event (live or virtual), then email me at dan@bibledude.net.

I can remember the first time I reached out to Dan King, wanting to be part of a group blogging project on The Mystery of the Cross. That was over a year ago …

After a few more projects, he approached me about becoming a part of the Bibledude.net team. He wanted me to write more consistently for the site and eventually take on an editor role. I was ecstatic. I think my response was something like: Ohmigosh, for real? I’d love to!

Dan very quickly became my mentor and my friend. I can’t help but see the love of Christ shining through everything that he does. He has been incredibly supportive of my own discernment and journey into writing. It never fails that just when I think I am not cut out for this sort of thing, he says something that picks me back up and sets my heart on fire again.

But maybe the thing about Dan that impresses me the most is his humility and his deep desire to make Christ known to those around him. He writes not to become famous, but to make God famous. He doesn’t shy away from tough topics, but instead pokes the fire a little, encouraging open dialogue and discussion.

He is never content with small … not because he wants to do great things, but because he knows God can do great things.

Social media guru, blogger, father and husband Dan King has written a compelling, inspirational new e-bookabout his journey from pew-warmer to poverty fighter. I have the privilege of knowing Dan personally through our work at The High Calling, and I absolutely love his heart for the Lord, his family, and the “least of these.” So I asked him if he would give some background about his life and ministry, and he generously agreed. I think you’ll love our conversation:

Why do you think we so often think we’re unworthy to serve God if we’re not on staff at a church or ministry?

I think we’ve become a personality-centered church. Maybe because it’s because of how we understand things like five-fold ministry (Ephesians 4:11). So much of our focus is on the pastor up front being the spiritual leader and having everything we need. We’ve been taught (intentionally or inadvertently) that these are the people equipped to do the work of ministry. But when we really understand the rest of that passage of Scripture, we see that they are actuallyservants whose role is to equip the rest of us for the work of the ministry.

So what we have is people sitting around asking themselves, “I’m not a pastor, or a teacher, or a prophet, so what can I do?” The answer is, EVERYTHING! We in the church need to get to a place where we understand that ‘the work of the ministry’ is a job that belongs to all of us!

Who are some of the people you admire for living out their faith in real, active ways?

Oh man… there are lots of them…

Have you ever seen a book title and subtitle and wished for a moment that that book was written about you, that it depicted your life in one single line?

That’s what I felt when I first saw the title of this book: “The Unlikely Missionary: From Pew-Warmer to Poverty-Fighter” by Dan King (from BibleDude.net).

I had this strong feeling that I wanted to be that person that changed from being a “pew-warmer” to becoming a “poverty-fighter”.

As some of you know, I’ve recently quit my job and I am now finding my new path in life (career-wise speaking). And it seems that it will have something to do with helping people, fighting poverty and/or missions. Maybe that’s why that book title spoke so deeply to me. So I prayed about it, of course, and as soon as the book was released I bought it.

The Unlikely Missionary is an ebook by Dan King, a blogger who has moved from having vague thoughts about poverty to writing about the topic on his blog to taking a trip to Africa with Five Talents International.

In taking this trip from Florida to Kenya and Uganda with the purpose of helping teach basic small business skills to local people, Dan doesn’t set out to change the world, the purpose in his heart is to sow seeds. In the process a seed is also sown in his own heart:

What if my greatest impact on a trip like this went beyond the work that I did while I was there? What if I could continue to have an even greater impact in the life of my son by showing him that I’m serious about making the world a better place, and that he can help? What if this whole thing sets off a chain reaction (even if it is just in my family) to make a difference not only half-way around the world, but even in our own backyard?

He comes face to face with the reality of poverty and also hope. Beyond the stereotypes of what “poor people” look like or act like, he sees the daily struggle to cope under difficult conditions which are not of their own doing.

In The Unlikely Missionary: From Pew-Warmer to Poverty-Fighter you hear the story about how I found passion and purpose for my faith as I studied the issue of extreme poverty. Then you follow my journey as I discover the impact of microenterprise through sharing the stories of an organization called Five Talents, even as it takes me on Business as Mission with them to Kenya and Uganda.

I believe in the work of Five Talents, and am asking you to help me invest more in them.

For the first week of November (1st thru 7th), I will be donating 100% of the proceeds earned from sales of The Unlikely Missionary to Five Talents to support the great work that they’re doing!

And I’m going to make this as easy as possible. You don’t have to mention anything or do anything special to make it count. That’s because every book sale counts this week, no matter where it comes from. All you have to do is buy one for yourself, gift one to someone else, or share this with someone who you think would be interested in reading the book and supporting the great work of an organization like Five Talents in the process.

This means that the simple act of buying a $5 book can make a difference in someone’s life… today.

“Master,” he said, “You have entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.” His master replied, “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful in a few things; I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.” (Matthew 25:14-30)

From Pew-Warmer to Poverty Fighter.

That’s the subtitle of Dan King’s ebook The Unlikely Missionary. And how long have I been holding down that pew on the right side of my church in the very last row? Going on twenty years. I like it there. It’s comfortable.

At least it was. Until I read Dan’s book.

Dan describes himself as “just a regular guy with a regular job and a regular family who sits in the regular church pews that most people do”.

But then…God turned his life upside down. And it all started with a pew-warmer who didn’t want to be warm…..lukewarm that is. And then a blog. And then a blog post. About poverty.

Dan participated in Blog Action Day in 2008 and developed a ‘new found rage” at the injustice of poverty. The numbers staggered him. The need overwhelmed him.

Who was doing something about this he demanded?

There are a few people you implicitly trust.

I met Dan King in a house full of world changers, a gathering of Shalom People. It was the night before an orphan care conference and the speakers, contributors, and spouses mingled over dinner.

Gary was there, and he told me about the orphans in Zambia.

Aschalew was there, and we spoke of the political climate in Ethiopia.

John was there, and he told me about the time he met Will Ferrell, how the metaphor of a wandering Elf holds for our generation.

They were grand people, each of them in their own right. But as I worked my way around the room, there was one dude I was particularly interested in meeting.

Honestly, who in their wildest dreams can predict what God has up his holy sleeve?

God could have come to Earth as a corporate exec, carrying a Coach leather briefcase and wearing Armani. Instead, He chose to come as a baby, in need of diapers and someone to kiss skinned knees.

Jesus could have convened a worldwide audience on CNN. Instead, he spent time with guys you’d find on bar stools, instead of pews or corporate board rooms.

This is a God who turns drug addicts into preachers,
who turns a boy-shepherd with a sling into a war hero,
who turns a young woman into the Savior’s mother.

This is a God who transforms pew warmers into missionaries. You know this God, yes?

God is in the habit of taking regular people like you, like me, like Dan King — aka the The Bible Dude – and sending them out into the world to do his work.

And here’s our typical response:

“I’m not qualified for this.”
– Dan King,
author of The Unlikely Missionary: From Pew Warmer to Poverty-Fighter

Dan King made me an offer that I almost refused. Well, he didn’t make the offer only to me, but you know that I can rarely see beyond the end of my nose to think about what is going on with other people. The offer was for bloggers to receive a free copy of Dan’s new e-book, The Unlikely Missionary: From Pew-Warmer to Poverty Fighter, if we would review it or otherwise promote it somehow on our blogs. This was problematic for me because I stink at book reviews. Long books, short books, any kind of book – I cannot pick out a central idea and I cannot review it from any kind of objective veiwpoint. I don’t summarize. I expand and expound – on what it has to do with me, me, me. Which is not what he asked for and not what you need to read. So I almost just clicked on past his offer without acknowledging that I had seen it.

The thing is, I really wanted to promote Dan (and his book). I have a heart for missions (even though my mission field has been reduced to handing people bottles of water and bags of peanut M&Ms). I enjoy cheering on missionaries of all types and even giving financial support when I can. That is why letting you know about Dan and his book is important to me.

So what did I do? I wrote up some bland interview questions and asked Dan to answer them. He graciously replied to them and even sent me that copy of the book. Which is what brings us to this blog post today.

This video is a short reading from chapter five: investing my talents. In it I share my struggle with feeling ready to do some of the teaching that I was about to do. An interaction with a blog follower that I was able to meet in Kenya made me realize the importance of the work we were doing.

How do you deal with it when you begin to understand how much other people are counting on you?

Tim Tebow is arguably one of the most amazing athletes on the planet right now. But he also grew up as the child of missionary parents, and that faith-foundation has continued to be a strong (and very public) aspect of his life. That’s why I attempted the impossible feat of getting him to endorse The Unlikely Missionary: From Pew-Warmer to Poverty-Fighter with a comment directed at him on Twitter.

To my surprise, I started to see others who supported the idea of getting a Tim Tebow endorsement for the book!

(UPDATED) I was updating this post daily for a while, but I stopped at 101 reasons since I figured that it would be more than enough to state my case. I’d still love for Tim Tebow to see this list and respond with an endorsement for the book, and tweeting this post (especially when using the button at the top of the post) will help make sure that he notices this. So please help me keep the dream alive, and encourage him to contact me about an endorsement. Thank you, and I hope you enjoy the list.

Tim Tebow should endorse The Unlikely Missionary: From Pew-Warmer to Poverty-Fighter because…

I’ll return the favor by endorsing his book.

Tom Davis says in the foreword that this is Tim Tebow’s story too (well, not directly… it’s more of a general “you” referring to all people who read it which includes Tim Tebow).

One of the alternate sub-titles was going to be From Bench-Warmer to NFL-Starter.

The book has remained scandal free despite regular references to ‘missionary position’. (credit: @DanPortnoy)

100% of the writing for this book occurred in the state of Florida (and 0% in the state of Georgia).

I’ve given @TimTebow a +K in Religion and Spirituality because he thinks God is awesome.

The only reason poverty exists is because Tim Tebow hasn’t stiff-armed it yet.

I guarantee that this won’t be a dropped pass.

I’ll give you a start on my fantasy football team ahead of Cam Newton.

Dan King (the author) is a scrappy young southpaw who refuses to take no for an answer… kinda like Tim Tebow.

I may be able to work out a <del>hack</del> deal that will automatically boost your fantasy football points by about 50 every week, making you the leagues top fantasy QB no matter what anyone else does.

It can be done from the shotgun formation.

If we hurry then we can help Agent P (a.k.a. @ImPerryPlatypus) stop @DrDoofenshmirtz from inventing the Tebow-inator and stiff-arming the entire Tri-State area!

(Posted on Veterans Day 2011) The author served in the US Marine Corps, which makes him tough like Tim Tebow.

It’s easier than a dump-off pass, and this one is guaranteed to score.

It’ll feel just as good as getting a touchdown on a QB-keeper up the middle.

It only takes ONE completion to win this one. (In honor Tim Tebow’s two-completion win against the Chiefs.)

I’ll come to Denver to play Running Back for the Broncos. Or I’ll let Tim Tebow carry me on his back while he’s running… whichever helps him get his game on better.

I would be willing to work with the Tim Tebow Foundation to set aside a period of time when 100% of the proceeds from books sold goes to support projects like Tebow CURE Hospital of the Philippines.

With the endorsement, he can lock in my vote now on the Pro Bowl ballots. Unless this would be considered like buying a vote… definitely want to take the moral high-road.

Time doesn’t determine when the game is over, Tim Tebow does. (In honor of his 95-yard, game-winning, 4th-quarter drive against the Jets.)

It’s easier than connecting on the pitch when running the option.

I’ll get a Broncos Jersey with #15 and “#theunlikelymissionary” as the name on the back.

I’ll tell my son what Tim’s real name is so that he stops calling him T-Bone.

We go to work wearing almost the same uniform…

I’ll co-author a book with Tim Tebow called The Unlikely Quarterback, and donate 100% of the proceeds to the Tim Tebow Foundation.

“In this life we cannot do great things. We can only do book endorsements with great love” ~ Mother Teresa

“God, send me anywhere, only go with me. Lay any burden on me, only sustain me. Sever any tie in my heart except the tie that binds my heart to Yours. And may Tim Tebow endorse The Unlikely Missionary.” ~ David Livingstone

“As a competitor and an athlete, you have to believe in yourself. And you have to believe in the people who believe in you.” – Tim Tebow

Don’t worry about the Tom Brady thing Tim… Your passer rating is about the same as his during his first year as a starter, but you have a better record.
Playoffs baby!

“I’m going to listen to John Elway. He knows what he’s talking about.” – Tim Tebow

“Tim Tebow should TOTALLY endorse The Unlikely Missionary!” ~ John Elway

“He’s a great guy and a good leader, and I’m trying to learn from him.” – Tim Tebow (Dude… you talkin’ about me?)

The season for fighting extreme poverty isn’t over yet either.

The book is now available in a print version, making it more accessible to more people!

You think beating Pittsburgh in overtime in the playoffs feels good? Imagine how it’ll feel when we beat poverty too!

By beating the Steelers, @nancyfranson‘s heart was broken. Endorsing the book would make her feel a whole lot better, and as a good Christian brother it would be the right thing to do.

I’m willing t0 extend this list all the way up to 316 reasons. Get it? 3:16!

Okay, so I missed a few days of updating this list. But that’s only because I’ve been so busy preparing for my upcoming trip to Haiti. I’m getting back on track now…

Now that the NFL season is done (at least for the Broncos), there will be more time for doing awesome stuff… like endorsing great Christian books!

I’ll send a bunch of copies to leave laying around the gym during the off-season.

Reading The Unlikely Missionary is like a stiff-arm to the heart.

The active ingredient in the The Unlikely Missionary is Word hidden inside Tim Tebow’s heart.

“The mark of a great (book) is not its seating capacity, but its sending capacity.” – Mike Stachura

Tim Tebow dreams of playing in the Super Bowl one day, author Dan King dreams of rising to the top of Amazon’s best seller list for books in Christian Missions and Evangelism. It seems we have a lot in common!

I’ll throw in my awesome recipe for Super Bowl Queso with Chips in return for the endorsement.

The book has something in common with books by/about Hudson Taylor, Mother Teresa, David Livingstone, John Chrysostom, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer… They’re all on an Amazon Best Seller list for books in Missions & Missionary Work!

I know that I’ve been slacking on this list for a little while, but Haiti called and they needed their Unlikely Missionary back.

This is the kind of thing that The Unlikely Missionary supports…

Haiti mud is hard to wash off, you know what I’m talking about.

Getting a @TimTebow endorsement would literally make me leap out of my chair. (In honor of Leap Year Day, February 29th!)

I’m willing to arm-wrestle @TimTebow for this, and I think I can take him!

I’ll pick up the tab for @TimTebow’s next dinner with @taylorswift13 (especially if she endorses the book too)!

I asked our mutual friend (Jesus) to mention it to you (@TimTebow). Have you heard from Him about this yet?

With somewhere around 7 billion people in the world, and those born into poverty growing at a faster rate than those who are not, this book challenges more people to do something about a rapidly growing epidemic.

“I’m busy working on book endorsements,” is a good excuse to get out of being on The Bachelor.

We’re not asking Peyton Manning for an endorsement right now.

Adding this endorsement work to the official @TimTebow résumé could positively impact his trade value.

I’m willing and available to take any open slots in the Tim Tebow Foundation Celebrity Golf Classic.

J-E-T-S-Jets-Jets-Jets! Guess who suddenly became a Jets fan?

“A godly man preferreth grace before goods, and wisdom before the world.” - Richard Bernard

“They have become experts at just surviving, because they spend most of their time simply finding a way to live until tomorrow.” (chapter 4: culture shock)

It’s a good book that’s challenging readers to live the Gospel in a greater way, and that alone is worth more than everything else on this list combined.

When I met Dan King during the course of a writer’s retreat he was dripping wet, having just been flipped out of a boat and into a river by a work colleague. He laughed, extended his hand, and introduced himself as the Bible Dude, creator of a website by that name, and author of a soon-to-be-published e-book entitled, The Unlikely Missionary.

During the course of the retreat I got to know Dan a little, this unlikely missionary. He told me about his work as a corporate training manager in the telecommunications industry and as social media editor for The High Calling network. He told me about the work he’d done in youth ministry with his church. He talked about how amazing and beautiful his wife is and showed me, on his phone, a picture of his daughter. I got to know The Bible Dude as a regular guy who does regular things in the real world. Dan King doesn’t fit any stereotypes which may come to mind when one hears the wordmissionary.

And it is Dan King’s regular-ness which makes his book, The Unlikely Missionary: From Pew-Warmer to Poverty Fighter, a compelling read for regular, ordinary followers of Jesus.

Last week I interviewed blogger Dan King. He just released a new ebook: The Unlikely Missionary. I hope you enjoy it.

Dan, before we jump into the content of the book, let me ask you a question. “How did you overcome the natural fears that most aspiring authors have and actually write this ebook?”

That’s a great question! Even though I’ve finished writing this one, I’m still kinda freaked out! I’ve been a blogger for about five years. I’ve rarely (if ever) referred to myself as a writer, because bloggers really aren’t writers, are they? But I’ve had some people express their confidence in me as a writer, and that’s helped a lot. One author asked me how many words I have published on my blog, and realizing that I’ve written over a quarter of a million words, he told me that I’ve already been published more than many other authors he knows. I guess sometimes I’m too hard on myself, but that’s only because I don’t have any professional training or a big degree in writing. But sticking to it, consistently, has helped me earn the respect of others who have helped to encourage me. I just know that I have a story to tell, one that’s important to God, and the power of people who believe in me. That’ll get you though any obstacles!

He emails me, a bolded alert from one screen to another, a thousand miles connected in a single click.

And a friendship is born.

I read his note and am always amazed when someone tells me the words I write resonate with them, as if this boy in Iowa just typing his heart can make an impact. In humble gratitude, I reply, fingers trembling as if touched by God Himself.

Looking back, I’m quite positive it was God.

I place my nook on the nightstand, turn off the light and shrink back into soft darkness, accompanied by only my thoughts. I think about this friendship and wonder if maybe there’s a bigger plan involved than I can see; if maybe my earth-dimmed view is failing again.

Because the view from heaven’s balcony is so often different than mine.

Maybe being asked by Dan King to be a contributing editor to BibleDude.Net is only a fraction of the plan and I’m suppose to be looking for more. Like I’ve only been licking the spatula and keep forgetting to bake the cake.
